In Indonesia’s Banda Aceh, a mysterious man emerges from the sea, and collapses on a beach. Meanwhile, Takako, a Japanese national who works for a non-profit organization engaged in disaster recovery and lives in Aceh with her son Takashi, is being interviewed at her home by aspiring journalist Ilma and her old friend Kris, who also attends college with Takashi. Suddenly, Takako receives a phone call about the discovery of an uncommunicative man about whom little is known, but appears to be Japanese. While she hurriedly attempts to ascertain his identity, Takashi is sent to the airport to pick up their visiting relative Sachiko. The stranger shows symptoms of amnesia, and Takako ends up reluctantly taking him into her custody. As he was found on a beach, she gives him the name “Laut,” the Indonesian word for“sea.” Eventually, Takako and Ilma are joined by Takashi, Kris, and Sachiko in their efforts to uncover who the enigmatic visitor is, and where he came from. Laut seems to be able to speak some broken Japanese and Indonesian, but spends most of the time simply smiling serenely. Then little by little, strange phenomena begin occurring in his presence...
