THE CALL OF THE FOGHORN
霧笛が俺を呼んでいる
During the golden era of Nikkatsu action films, there were three undisputed box office hitters. Yujiro Ishihara, Akira Kobayashi, and Keiichiro "Tony" Akagi. In this classic romantic mystery film, Akagi tries to unearth the truth behind his best friend's mysterious death. Director Tokujiro Yamazaki conveys a star studded story in a dark cinematic tone that synchronizes with Akagi's edgy performance.
Signs of engine trouble had postponed the departure of "Suzuran-Maru". Sugi (Keiichiro Akagi), navigator of the ship, followed the rest of his crew into a nearby tavern to kill time. When one of his shipmates teases a waitress, a full-scale brawl breaks out and a night of fisticuffs quickly turns into a night in handcuffs. When Sugi visits to greet his friend Hamazaki the next morning, he finds that he had been discovered dead two weeks ago. Authorities believe that it was suicide – but Sugi believes otherwise.
