Sayuri Yoshinaga and Mitsuo Hamada, the famous Nikkatsu duo, acts superbly in a film that weaves a harrowing tale of the tragedies of war. Near the end of the Pacific War, Student Corps are mobilized to defend their homeland. Reality not only strips these young girls of their adolescence, but ultimately leads them to their death. Director Toshio Masuda illustrates the unsentimental truths of war, with a powerful gripping message.
In 1943, critical developments in the Pacific War have placed Japan at a disadvantage, although the fiery breaths of war had not yet reached Okinawa Girl School. Nothing seemed the least bit out of the ordinary, as Kazuko (Sayuri Yoshinaga) and her friends enjoyed a day of sports. A year later, the war takes a devastating turn, as US forces plan an amphibious attack known as "Operation Iceberg" on the Ryukyu Island.
