Kyutaro Madarame was once a master of the Muso-Itto sword-fighting style who earned the intimidating nickname of “Madara the Devil.” After his path to higher rank was blocked in Edo, he became masterless. Now he is back in his hometown in the Kaga domain with his nagging mother-in-law, Tae. One day, Tae tells him of an opportunity to work as a sword instructor in the Tosa domain on the island outpost of Shikoku. Reluctantly, Kyutaro decides to make the journey there with his beloved cat, Tamanojo. However, just before they reach the dock for their ship to Shikoku, a mysterious ninja steals their belongings. While they are being deceived by the ninja’s “shadow cloning” technique, the ship sails off without them. In fact, this is all the doing of Tae, who is trying to make her daughter Oshizu divorce Kyutaro! Nevertheless, he manages to rent a small boat, and they set sail for Tosa. After battling hunger and heavy rain, a landmass finally appears ahead. “Tosa! Shikoku!” Kyutaro shouts with joy, only to find out that it isn’t an island - it's the back of a gigantic whale!
